Surgical care for pets has made great strides in the past decade. Advances in surgical techniques, pain control, and infection avoidance have all been incorporated into our surgical plans. Regular continuing education keeps the veterinarians up-to-date on the latest techniques.
We have a separate surgical suite, fully-equipped with cardiac, blood pressure, and respiratory monitors. All pets will have pre-surgical blood work to assess their “inner workings” before any anesthesia is given. This allows us to detect any problems that could affect the pet’s response to anesthetics. If a problem is detected, the procedure can be postponed or a different anesthetic protocol used.
Depending on the situation, either injectable anesthesia or gas anesthesia can be used. We only use Sevoflurane for gas anesthesia, which is the newest and safest gas anesthetic available. Pre-operative pain medication is given to most patients (again depending on the situation), and the patient is regularly assessed postoperatively for pain. Various options are available for pain control.
A registered veterinary technician will do all the preparation work for surgery and monitoring during surgery. The technician will also stay with that pet until they are fully recovered from the anesthesia.
Laser surgery is available for several procedures. The laser is an intense beam of light that can be precisely controlled, minimizing trauma on surrounding tissues. The advantages of laser surgery include less pain, bleeding and swelling, which reduces the risk of infection and speeds recovery. All feline declaw procedures are done with the laser, and it is available as an option for several other procedures.
We are equipped to handle elective, routine, and emergency surgeries. Occasionally a procedure may be best performed at a referral facility. In this case, we will discuss all the options with you and provide the referral information.
